Solution Transforms Cameras into Active Vision Systems Capable of Event Detection and Analytics

TORONTO – NOVEMBER 14, 2018 – Arcturus Networks Inc. demonstrated today an intelligent vision analytics system capable of detecting various public safety, security and operational events from within a stream of live video. The demonstration illustrated the application of advanced machine vision algorithms combined with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) object classification methods to identify events such as motion, intrusion, boundary crossing, zone incursion, loitering, motionless behaviour, abandoned package, face verification, removed object, crowd estimation, crowd flow and counter flow. The demonstrations addressed two key factors with existing video surveillance technology –the reliance on human monitoring and the escalating demand for bandwidth as camera deployments grow and resolutions increase.

Real-time Analysis

The demonstration involved continuously processing video in real-time by applying a mix of background subtraction, tracking and object classification methods to identify different events and behaviours. When an event occurred, such as a person crossing a virtual boundary from one zone into another zone, the system produced an incident notification. The notification gets used to alert personnel and streamlines their workflow by providing them a complete video sequence of the incident. This level of automation reduces the continuous performance workload of analysts and improves their situational awareness, resulting in faster, more effective responses.

“Existing camera systems are passive, they require events to be observed and reported before an analyst gets involved to review the footage, then determine the situation,” said David Steele, director of innovation at Arcturus. “By using machine vision, we can transform cameras into active detection systems capable of identifying events, such as a person falling from the edge of a subway platform onto the tracks. Response time is critical in this situation and analysts need to understand how the event transpired to determine if it was accidental or criminal.”

Reduced Network Traffic

Existing analytics systems rely extensively on central “big-iron” infrastructure and cloud services. This approach requires the transmission of pixel data from each camera to a central system for processing. As the proliferation of surveillance cameras escalates and resolutions increase this places upward pressure on the bandwidth capacity of the network, resulting in data bottlenecks, extensibility problems and the requirement for new infrastructure to support capacity expansion. Edge-based analytics provides a distributed approach where video is pre-processed at the edge of the network resulting in small-packet event notifications and video-on-demand, instead of every pixel of data. This approach eliminates the need for ever-increasing bandwidth capacity and makes video surveillance a suitable application for systems connected using a pay-per-bit providers, such as public transit vehicles connected via LTE.

Arcturus Launches Second Generation VoIP Module For Wired or Wireless Voice Communication Systems

ARCTURUS LAUNCHES SECOND GENERATION VOIP MODULE FOR WIRED OR WIRELESS VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

uCMK64-VoIP Platform Combines NXP K64 Arm® Cortex®-M4 Microcontroller with VoIP, Multicast PA Software and Mbarx Secure IoT firmware

TORONTO – SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today announced the availability of the uCMK64-VoIP module and development kit. The solution specifically targets two-way, full-duplex voice communication systems such as intercoms, speakerphones, public address (PA) systems, mass notification, IP speakers and Wi-Fi walkie/talkies. The uCMK64-VoIP is a second-generation part, adding additional features and security when compared to the predecessor uCMK60-VoIP module. The uCMK64-VoIP is built using an NXP K64 Arm Cortex-M4 microcontroller. The system enables high-reliability, hardened voice communications for mission critical products, allowing developers to focus on their core application without the need to become VoIP signalling or audio processing experts.

The system uses discrete firmware loads to support various modes of operation including Ethernet or Wi-Fi based, full-duplex VoIP using standard SIP signaling and RTP media, or PA capability using multicast audio distribution from one transmitter to many receivers across 100 unique channels. The system supports stored voice progress announcements, various narrow and wide-band audio codecs and audio intelligibility enhancements including AEC and noise reduction.

The uCMK64-VoIP can be operated using a dedicated I/O interface that supports common functions such as push-to-call controls, volume and mute features as well as call progress and alarm status indicators. A dedicated UART interface is available for system integration with a local MCU to support custom applications and interfaces. The included Mbarx Secure IoT endpoint software supports system-level integration via a secure TLS enabled TCP/IP socket for networked or cloud connected host applications. Protocol extensions within the Mbarx endpoint stack enable bi-directional network-to-UART communication between the TCP/IP remote host and the UART connected device. This flexible mix of peripheral and host connectivity simplifies system-level integration for IoT and other supervised workflow systems.

uCMK6x Family Compatibility

The uCMK64-VoIP module is pin compatible with the uCMK60-VoIP module. The two platforms share the same capabilities and firmware operating modes. Users with existing uCMK60-VoIP applications should be able to use the uCMK64-VoIP with little or no modifications to module host board hardware or host control application software.

uCMK64-VoIP Enhancements

The uCMK64-VoIP provides improved security on the Mbarx Secure IoT socket connection by implementing certificate-based authentication and TLS v1.2 cryptography. This enhancement forms a chain-of-trust architecture across Mbarx endpoints, tools and gateways. This ecosystem provides end-to-end secure control and management of deployed devices regardless of where in the world they are, including configuration, host control and code-signed Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates.

The uCMK64-VoIP features several voice enhancements including improved PA audio fidelity using the G.722 audio codec. A wider array of voice processing and optional codec components including low-bit rate codecs iLBC, G.729A and Dynamic Transmission (DTX) media.

In addition to security and codecs, A number of optional extensions are available including a new subsystem that allows users to upload, store and play custom announcement files. Other features include improved QoS/DSCP compatibility and text-based intercommunication using SIP instant messaging.

Pricing and Availability

Active migration of new customers from uCMK60-VoIP to uCMK64-VoIP is currently underway.

Arcturus Simplifies Secure Management of Remote IoT Sites

Mbarx Secure IoT offers an end-to-end, chain-of-trust Ecosystem Including Endpoints, Tools and Gateways

TORONTO – FEBRUARY 28, 2017 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today announced the availability of the Mbarx Site Controller gateway stack –intended to simplify the secure management of remote IoT sites. The solution targets commercial-grade IoT deployments that require endpoints to be located inside remote networks, spread across many facilities or otherwise not directly addressable from the internet. The solution leverages the TLS-based chain-of-trust architecture built into the Mbarx Secure IoT ecosystem, extending capability to provide secure connectivity, control and management across many device sites.

The Mbarx Site Controller makes it possible to reliably provide secure connectivity from a public network to devices located in remote subnets or behind cone or symmetric NAT firewalls. This improves the overall security architecture of IoT systems by providing a tightly managed central gateway and service, eliminating the need for each endpoint node to open and maintain its own connection to the public network. The solution uses X509 Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificates and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1.2) secure communication. In addition to this authentication and encryption, the system provides further payload integrity, authenticity and compatibility validation. This combination of security features provides a complete chain-of-trust architecture that spans across the entire ecosystem of Mbarx tools, gateways and endpoints.

“For commercial applications, it may not be desirable to have hundreds of devices egress a home network to connect to a cloud service.” said David Steele, product manager. “Applications in environments such as building systems, healthcare facilities or transportation networks, may operate in their own local, private cloud. Management of these systems by a manufacturer or by a central resource often requires physically going to the location to change configuration or deploy new firmware, this can be an expensive and time consuming proposition.”

The Mbarx Site Controller, which is built on top of Linux, resides at the edge of the device network and tracks endpoints by monitoring the Mbarx service discovery announcements. This database resource is used by a connecting application as a method to establish a secure point-to-point connection, proxying through the gateway, to each device. The system supports a firmware update service that makes use of an internal firmware repository, this makes it possible for devices to obtain firmware securely, from a trusted service, at the local site location. The Mbarx Site Controller is fully compatible with the powerful Mbarx System Manager desktop application, which is used for the management workflow of devices and sites.

Mbarx Tools and Gateways

Mbarx tools help manage IoT networks by handling site-wide workflow. Mbarx System Manager supports firmware deployments, configuration, templates and site monitoring, using simple click-through, browser-like workflow. A built-in app’s store provides a method to securely acquire firmware images from a trusted source, while a secure upgrade service allows devices to periodically call home and check for new firmware automatically.

Mbarx tools and gateways can be added as needed allowing a flexible, extensible building block approach to IoT systems. Tools can be OEM branded through customization provided directly by Arcturus. This simplified approach allows developers to focus on their core IoT application and spend less time developing or maintaining underpinning IoT elements.

TORONTO – JUNE 22, 2016 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today announced the availability of the uCMK64-IoT module and development kit. The system combines a NXP Kinetis K64 ARM® Cortex-M4 microcontroller with Arcturus Mbarx secure IoT end-point firmware. The system supports connectivity options for both 802.11bgn Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet networks, peripheral connectivity and an optional audio subsystem. The platform is built using extended temperature parts and is suitable for a range of industrial IoT applications that require secure communication and operational control, across an un-trusted or public network. The uCMK64-IoT is supported by the Mbarx eco-system of IoT tools and gateways, together these elements form a chain-of-trust architecture to help developers create secure end-to-end IoT systems. This simplified approach allows developers to focus on their core IoT application and spend less time developing or maintaining underpinning IoT elements.

Mbarx End-points

Mbarx end-point nodes combine services for device discovery, pairing and connection origination with a host protocol for control. Host protocol communication is available using a secure TCP/IP socket or local UART connection, extensions are provided to communicate across peripheral interfaces to address I/O, I2C or UART. A full command API is provided along with integration tools to help with development.

Mbarx end-points support industry standard TLS authentication and encryption. Built on top of this secure communication is support for data payload assurance. This additional protection can verify the integrity of critical data payload, confirm code-signing authenticity and cross-check compatibility with target hardware.
