Arcturus Simplifies Secure Management of Remote IoT Sites

Mbarx Secure IoT offers an end-to-end, chain-of-trust Ecosystem Including Endpoints, Tools and Gateways

TORONTO – FEBRUARY 28, 2017 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today announced the availability of the Mbarx Site Controller gateway stack –intended to simplify the secure management of remote IoT sites. The solution targets commercial-grade IoT deployments that require endpoints to be located inside remote networks, spread across many facilities or otherwise not directly addressable from the internet. The solution leverages the TLS-based chain-of-trust architecture built into the Mbarx Secure IoT ecosystem, extending capability to provide secure connectivity, control and management across many device sites.

The Mbarx Site Controller makes it possible to reliably provide secure connectivity from a public network to devices located in remote subnets or behind cone or symmetric NAT firewalls. This improves the overall security architecture of IoT systems by providing a tightly managed central gateway and service, eliminating the need for each endpoint node to open and maintain its own connection to the public network. The solution uses X509 Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificates and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1.2) secure communication. In addition to this authentication and encryption, the system provides further payload integrity, authenticity and compatibility validation. This combination of security features provides a complete chain-of-trust architecture that spans across the entire ecosystem of Mbarx tools, gateways and endpoints.

“For commercial applications, it may not be desirable to have hundreds of devices egress a home network to connect to a cloud service.” said David Steele, product manager. “Applications in environments such as building systems, healthcare facilities or transportation networks, may operate in their own local, private cloud. Management of these systems by a manufacturer or by a central resource often requires physically going to the location to change configuration or deploy new firmware, this can be an expensive and time consuming proposition.”

The Mbarx Site Controller, which is built on top of Linux, resides at the edge of the device network and tracks endpoints by monitoring the Mbarx service discovery announcements. This database resource is used by a connecting application as a method to establish a secure point-to-point connection, proxying through the gateway, to each device. The system supports a firmware update service that makes use of an internal firmware repository, this makes it possible for devices to obtain firmware securely, from a trusted service, at the local site location. The Mbarx Site Controller is fully compatible with the powerful Mbarx System Manager desktop application, which is used for the management workflow of devices and sites.

Mbarx Tools and Gateways

Mbarx tools help manage IoT networks by handling site-wide workflow. Mbarx System Manager supports firmware deployments, configuration, templates and site monitoring, using simple click-through, browser-like workflow. A built-in app’s store provides a method to securely acquire firmware images from a trusted source, while a secure upgrade service allows devices to periodically call home and check for new firmware automatically.

Mbarx tools and gateways can be added as needed allowing a flexible, extensible building block approach to IoT systems. Tools can be OEM branded through customization provided directly by Arcturus. This simplified approach allows developers to focus on their core IoT application and spend less time developing or maintaining underpinning IoT elements.

Arcturus uCMK64-IOT Module Accelerates Development of Secure IoT Systems

The system combines a NXP Kinetis K64 ARM® Cortex-M4 microcontroller with Arcturus Mbarx secure IoT end-point firmware. The system supports connectivity options for both 802.11bgn Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet networks, peripheral connectivity and an optional audio subsystem. The platform is built using extended temperature parts and is suitable for a range of industrial IoT applications that require secure communication and operational control, across an un-trusted or public network. The uCMK64-IoT is supported by the Mbarx eco-system of IoT tools and gateways, together these elements form a chain-of-trust architecture to help developers create secure end-to-end IoT systems. This simplified approach allows developers to focus on their core IoT application and spend less time developing or maintaining underpinning IoT elements.

Mbarx End-points

Mbarx end-point nodes combine services for device discovery, pairing and connection origination with a host protocol for control. Host protocol communication is available using a secure TCP/IP socket or local UART connection, extensions are provided to communicate across peripheral interfaces to address I/O, I2C or UART. A full command API is provided along with integration tools to help with development.

Mbarx end-points support industry standard TLS authentication and encryption. Built on top of this secure communication is support for data payload assurance. This additional protection can verify the integrity of critical data payload, confirm code-signing authenticity and cross-check compatibility with target hardware.

Arcturus Demonstrates that IoT is for the Birds with Backyard Chicken Coop

“La Coop De Ville” provides safe and comfortable environment for chickens to thrive.

TORONTO – MAY 19, 2016 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today demonstrated an IoT enabled backyard chicken coop at the NXP FTF Technology Forum in Austin Texas. The demonstration uses the Arcturus uCMK64-IoT module hardware and features NFC communications and smartphone app. The chicken coop demonstrates how it is possible to apply IoT technology to applications beyond home control and in support of sustainable initiatives, such as urban agriculture.

“The coop is a thought experiment that began its life as a quest for the best egg and grew wings from there,” said David Steele, product manager. “We wanted to understand how we could apply technology to help ensure the safest, happiest, healthiest backyard chickens.”

The chicken coop referred to as “La Coop De Ville” consists of the uCMK64-IoT module from Arcturus, mechanical access control entry system, NFC reader, environmental controls and a smartphone application. The uCMK64-IoT module controls the internal coop operation, provides network connectivity, secure communication and smart phone pairing. Each chicken is equipped with a unique NFC tag. As a chicken approaches, the tag is read by a sensor embedded in the coop tread-way. The data is relayed securely to a smartphone application that uses the NFC ID to query an internal database. The ID is cross-referenced against access control policies, the resulting information is used to determine if the door should be opened automatically or require user intervention. The smartphone application provides user notifications, database information, live chicken feed video stream, access control operation and entrance door supervision. In addition, the system can determine which chickens are inside or outside the coop and activity-track specific chickens for health monitoring. The application also monitors external data sources which are used to provide intelligent controls. Lighting is linked to local sunrise and sunset times to help mimic a more natural circadian rhythm, while external weather and air quality data can be applied to access control policies to help prevent chickens from being exposed to harsh conditions unnecessarily.

“This demonstration is intended only as a showcase, however, there are practical applications of this technology for both four-legged and two-legged creatures,” said Steele. Bi-products include pet doors, building access control systems, two-factor authentication and even applications in assisted living environments for helping staff and residents.”

About the uCMK64 IoT Module

The uCMK64-IoT is a mid-range IoT module that supports a combination of Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity, peripheral integration, I/O controls and optional local or wide area voice communication. It specifically targets specialized applications in buildings, transportation networks or healthcare systems. The module makes use of a Kinetis K64 microcontroller from NXP, running firmware based on the NXP software development kit for HomeKit accessories with iOS integration or Arcturus secure Mbarx IoT middleware with responsive HTLM5 mobile integration.

Arcturus Mbarx MCU Middleware Delivers Big Security For Little Devices

Mbarx-R4 release addresses IoT security, management and enhances remote maintenance capabilities.

TORONTO – February 3, 2016 – Arcturus Networks Inc. today previewed the R4 release of Mbarx IoT Middleware for microcontrollers and the eco-system of Mbarx tools. Mbarx-R4 supports a number of enhancements, most significantly, a new security architecture, better integrated connectivity and improved tools for managing and deploying remote sites.

At the heart of the new Mbarx release is an enhanced security architecture that makes use of industry standard TLS (Transport Layer Security). The application of an industry standard approach to secure TCP/IP socket communications means better overall security, broader compatibility with upstream services and an evolution toward more secure IoT deployments. Mbarx-R4 goes beyond implementing secure socket-layer communication by verifying data payload, authenticity, compatibility and integrity. These additional features, combined with the eco-system of secure Mbarx tools, forms a complete chain-of-trust architecture.

Mbarx-R4 includes new features to assist with deployment and management of device sites. A remote server connection with a “call home” feature allows an end-point to establish a secure connection to a remote host, automatically at reboot, or periodically during normal operation. This capability improves connectivity for devices that are behind firewalls or at remote site locations and simplifies the development of cloud connected applications. The Mbarx System Manager tool has been extended to make use of this feature by supporting an automatic firmware upgrade service.

“With Mbarx-R4 managing and maintain devices has never been easier or more secure,” said David Steele, product manager. “In System Manager you simply define a version of firmware as “current”, enable the service and as devices call home, System Manager will update their firmware to the current version over the secure connection.”

System Manager has also been extended to support remote sites. By connecting to a remote site System Manager forms a secure connection to a gateway and presents the remote site as if it were a local network. A built in demo of this capability is included with System Manager.

About Mbarx IoT Middleware

Mbarx IoT middleware combines three key services – device discovery, TLS security and a operational protocol. Device discovery is used to identify Mbarx devices on the network for the purpose of establishing a connection. The operational protocol, which can be run over a UART or secure TCP/IP socket connection, abstracts device configuration and control into a easy-to-use command protocol. While existing IoT protocols such as MQTT or CoAP are normally insecure and limited to passing messages, Mbarx offers security and a set of pre-defined objects for services and settings that are already integrated into the system software. Mbarx operational capability includes addressing peripherals such as UART, I2C and I/O.

Mbarx-R4 release including updated tools is expected to be available in February, to qualified customers. Mbarx IoT middleware is available for ARM based microcontrollers including Cortex-M4.
