Arcturus Networks and Belcarra technologies team up to provide USB solutions to the next generation of routers and gateways
Tuesday, September 17th, 2002
TORONTO and VANCOUVER CANADA, September 17, 2002 — Arcturus Networks Inc., creators and innovators of the industry standard uClinux embedded operating system and Belcarra Technologies, leaders in serial transport protocol development, announced the combining of forces today to deliver USB support for the Arcturus Residential Gateway firmware suites. The partnership will result in the availability of USB Remote NDIS device support for OEM’s developing the next generation of embedded Residential Gateway and CPE devices. USB RNDIS is a standard Microsoft® USB host facility for networking and eliminates the need for additional Windows® driver software. This simplifies end-user operation and reduces product support costs for an OEM or carrier.
“Through our partnership, end users of our design will be able to simply plug their PC based desktop or laptop right into our box and immediately have network access.” said Jeff Dionne CEO Arcturus Networks Inc.
The joint solution will eliminate the need for end users to purchase and install additional hardware to network their different PC based devices and enable the interoperability demanded in a LAN/WAN solution for the home, small or branch office.
USB was conceived to replace the various extra cards that users struggled with when adding such things as networking, sound, and extra storage. USB support within Linux has included simple, single-function devices such as cameras, printers and disk drives; however, the use of USB for connecting complex devices such as PDAs and routers to a Desktop system for data and network sharing has not had an elegant and architecture-independent solution prior to Belcarra. Alternate solutions also rely on special drivers on the Windows host end.
“Our Linux RNDIS package now makes the deployment of USB networking devices such as those based on Arcturus firmware that much easier and less expensive for new product developers,” said Richard Pitt, CEO of Belcarra.
Availability
The joint solution will be integrated as part of the Arcturus firmware suites, which include SentryVPN™ for secure networking, MIBflex™ for remote management and SIPstream™ for Voice and session media. For more information on Arcturus RG hardware and firmware support contact Arcturus Sales.
